Royal Ellington Concert, The

This unique DVD features the first ever public performance of Duke Ellington's rarely-performed work 'The Queen's Suite', given by The Bob Wilber Big Band at the Royal Festival Hall in 1989. Duke Ellington was inspired to write The Queen's Suite after meeting HM The Queen at a private audience in London in 1957. It was recorded in 1959, but Ellington instructed that only one disc was to be pressed and it was to be delivered to Buckingham Palace. It wasn't until the 1970's that the recording was commercially available to almost universal acclaim. This recording of Ellington's masterpiece was made at London's Royal Festival Hall on 23 January, 1989, in the presence of HRH The Princess Royal. The work is performed by a sixteen piece orchestra, put together by saxophonist and Ellington specialist Bob Wilber, who received a Grammy Award in 1985 for his recreation of Duke Ellington's music in Francis Ford Coppola's film, The Cotton Club. The six movements that make up the The Queen's Suite reflect the qualities he saw in The Queen - majesty, beauty and wonder. One of the highlights is the hauntingly lovely piano solo Single Petal Of A Rose. The concert also includes other Ellington classics and features the legendary jazz vocalist Adelaide Hall, who performed with Ellington on many occasions.
